Organic vs Conventantal
What happens when humans mass produce food? Food starts to resemble cellulose instead of food, lots of volume and little substance. It has been happening for decades. Minerals are sucked out of the soil over time and they are replaced with fertilizers. In the old days farmers rotated crops and allowed the soil to recondition. Money and industry has changed that. Dr. Oz pointed out last fall that we are starting to find high concentrations of arsenic in our apple juice, it has also been found in rice and rice milk. Arsenic is found naturally in rocks and soil and it is also a by product of industrial farming activities. The health agencies have classified arsenic as organic and inorganic, both types have been found in our food. The Vancouver Sun put a positive Canadian twist on things. Saying that there is no need to fear because there are only traces of the poisons found in apple juice. Kids can guzzle a litre of apple juice or rice milk per day. Oddly enough, it seems to be the big companies that are suffering from the contamination, Mott's get approx. 60 % of their apples from China. China doesn't have the same regulations as North America. This is where they place the blame. The other negative about industrial farming is the decline of the health benefits of healthy foods. The vitamins and minerals that nourish us have been diminishing for years.
The next time you go shopping and look at the price of organic food this chart might help. Hopefully we can buy less food and get more nutrients from the food we do buy. This chart is from 1995. The Price of Organic food is approx. 30% higher than non organic, the nutritional value of organic food is approx 50% greater than non organic. I know where I am spending my money.
A simple test between a backyard grown tomato and a grocery store tomato will tell the tale. The full rich flavour of a home grown tomato will make the grocery store one not worth buying. All that flavour comes from the vitamins and minerals that compose the perfect tomato. You can taste the goodness. There is a good reason that farmers markets are making a comeback. We all have a choice of where to spend our money. If we buy organic we invest into farmers that care about our food more than profit. If we buy the fancy packaging and perfect looking non organic food we invest in an industry that causes disease and environmental damage and in my opinion places humanity in a downward spiral. the first things you see when you walk into a department store? Skin products and lots of them. Different manufacturers offer exotic creams crafted out of everything from somebody’s leftover placenta to the food off some poor bee’s plate. French and Swiss companies purveying little tubes with huge price tags, selling us a variety of salves, lotions, creams, ointments, and pomades to pour over our bodies’ delicate covering, our skin. And we buy, buy, and buy, shelling out millions of dollars each year for the privilege of dabbing fine ointments on ourselves.
